🎨 🎠🎶 Arts on Prescription is an inspiring approach that enables health and social care professionals to prescribe arts, culture, and nature-based activities as a way to support people’s health and well-being. (Definition adapted from A Field Guide for US Communities.)
Research shows that creative engagement can lead to remarkable benefits, including:
✨ reduced loneliness
✨ stronger social connections
✨ improved mental and overall well-being
✨ better mood and a higher quality of life
From group arts workshops, drama and singing sessions, to cultural outings such as museum visits, these activities provide meaningful, enjoyable, and accessible ways to enhance people’s health. Originally developed in the UK, the Arts on Prescription model is now gaining momentum internationally, including across Europe. Evidence demonstrates that it is not only transformative for individuals but also cost-effective—reducing reliance on medication and medical appointments while easing pressure on healthcare systems.

Here in Malta, although a formal model has not yet been introduced, we already have a rich tradition of community-based and arts-led initiatives within care settings.

🌟 We are now launching a national study to explore the current landscape of Arts on Prescription in Malta.
This research will help us understand existing awareness, confidence levels, and what is needed to build a strong and sustainable future framework. It represents an important step towards establishing a formal Arts on Prescription model locally.

A creative participatory project in paediatrics at SAMOC and Mater Dei

“A Creative Participatory Project in Paediatrics at Mater Dei and SAMOC” launched in November 2025, this initiative officially began with a visit from Dr. Persephone Sextou, who provided invaluable insights for our creative practitioners: Anna Formosa, Pamela Abela, Sarah Spiteri, and Serena Marija. Together, the creatives who have plenty of experience in their respective arts background, are embarking on a collaborative journey to engage young patients in care, navigating the complexities of creative engagement, ethical considerations, hospital protocols. Stay tuned as we continue to explore innovative ways to the healthcare experience for children and their families.

Previous projects

‘NisÄ¡a ta’ Lwien’ (Weave of Colours) was an inspiring community project organised by the Northern Regional Council and supported by Creative Health Malta, aimed at connecting the arts with cultural heritage and the natural environment. Professional artists delivered a range of creative workshops and exhibitions throughout the Northern region, including painting sessions, clay-making workshops, a bird-photography exhibition, and a toy wood-making workshop. These activities were hosted in a variety of settings—spanning natural landscapes to cultural heritage sites—offering participants meaningful artistic experiences within the region. (Spring 2025)

This project brought together a group of like-minded people to discover their creative potential and create new friendships through different art forms. (2024)
